I just remembered a scene in KungFu Panda when the protagonist puts all his chi into the villain, Kai, who wants it all. Kai instantly gains the power, but loses the marks of all his efforts’ milestones in his attempts to gain the chi from other masters in the spirit world. Their jade bonds become reverted to their true forms as masters and the villain is defeated, stuck in the spirit world with nothing to use or spend his newly overpowered chi.

The simplified explanation is, the villain was defeated by wealth.
